Mental health issues awareness should be imparted to the school teachers so that they can detect such problems early in children, said Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

While launching the UNICEF(United Nations Children's Fund)'s global flagship publication, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that teachers should be trained to detect mental health issues in children so that children can be referred for treatment or counselling at the early stages of the problem.

Mandaviya emphasised the significance of family in this regard. He said the biggest educational institute is family and the families should always encourage the younger members of the family to freely discuss their issues so that any emerging mental health issues can be identified early in children. He also said that Covid -19 pandemic was the mental stress test of the entire society.

Mandaviya also highlighted that mental health issues fall in both old and emerging health issues categories. According to him, joint families is a better set up for the younger generation to release their mental stress as they always find someone in the family with whom they can discuss their problems and views, however, modern nuclear families have little place for such talks.

India Today quoted the minister, "The State of the World's Children 2021 - On My Mind: Promoting, Protecting and Caring for Children's Mental Health."

"It is important that in families all the members sit together and parents must treat their children as friends and ensure a free dialogue takes place so that children are able to talk freely. They should also observe closely the changes happening in their behaviour," he added.
