Non-Agricultural Universities in Maharashtra to hold exams in offline mode: Uday Samant

Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant have announced that the upcoming semester examinations of non-agriculture universities in the state will be conducted in offline mode, as decided by the Vice-Chancellors of all these institutions. While speaking to the reporters, Samant said that students must understand that exams were cancelled earlier and were later conducted in online mode owing to the COVID-19 wave.
"If we keep conducting the exams online, it would raise a question mark on whether the industry would accept such students. Hence, the examinations will now be conducted as per directions of the universities and in the offline mode," the minister said.

He also clarified that the decision to conduct the exams offline was not taken by the state government, but by the Vice-Chancellors of 13 non-Agri Universities. He said this while answering the queries made by some students demanding exams in online mode. On April 2, the Maharashtra government had lifted all the COVID-19 related restrictions, including wearing of face masks in public places.

The Minister also urged that the convocation ceremonies should be conducted as per Maharashtrian tradition and not in the colonial way. "Convocation ceremonies are generally so long that many people literally go to sleep. Besides, the pin-drop silence during such events doesn't look good," he said.

The minister further stated that he was informed by an official that the convocation tradition has continued since the colonial times. However, from next year, the Universities and colleges across the state all requested to conduct the convocation as per the Maharashtrian tradition (Marathmola) with enthusiasm and fanfare.
