The pre-matric scholarships provided to the ST and SC boarders is one of the flagship schemes announced by the Odisha government that comes under the ST and SC Development Department and School and Mass Education Department.
The Odisha government announced a hike in the pre-matric scholarship. According to the latest decision taken by the government of Odisha regarding pre-matric scholarship for ST and SC Boarders, the pre-matric scholarship amount has been increased from INR 750 to INR 950 for boys. For girls, the pre-matric scholarship amount has been increased from INR 800 to INR 1000. The hike in the expenditure has taken place after seven years.
The pre-matric scholarship scheme announced by the Odisha government benefits more than five boarders of ST and SC communities. A total amount of INR 490 crores will be spent on the expenditure annually for the pre-matric scholarship.

Last pre-matric scholarship took place in 2015
The last time the government of Odisha increased the monthly amount of pre-matric scholarships was in 2015. The pre-matric scholarship, which is largely intended for mess management in hostels, aims to support ST and SC boarders' educational and overall development.
The pre-matric scholarship monthly amount is provided to the students to help them meet the expenditure of the mess of hostels which includes lentils, vegetables, non-vegetarian items, edible oil, spices and fuel cost. Furthermore, millet (mandia)-based food items will be included to hostel menus to meet boarders' nutritional needs.
The government has hiked pre-matric scholarships after seven years for both boys and girls. The expenditure which will be spent on pre-matric scholarship is Rs.490 crores, majorly spent on the hostel mess.
