There has been no hike in stipends for these doctors from state-run medical colleges for almost a decade

Senior and junior resident doctors associated with medical colleges in Punjab have demanded an increase in stipends. The doctors have written to the state Chief Minister and Medical Education minister to press for their demands.

There has been no hike in stipends of these doctors from the state-run medical colleges for almost a decade, while in neighbouring states of Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan, the resident doctors are drawing higher stipends. In their letter sent to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the doctors have questioned why the pay commission hike is not applied to their stipends when everyone has already got their hike as per the latest pay commission.

The letter by the Union of Resident Doctors of Punjab talking about the stipend increment of Senior and Junior Resident doctors working in Government Medical Colleges of Punjab states that they intend to bring to his notice an important issue of Resident Doctors (Senior and Junior Residents) working in Punjab government colleges and hospitals.

Residents are the ones managing and handling the significant workload of the Medical Colleges and Hospitals in Punjab. โ€œPostgraduate doctors are paying fees approximately Rs 2 lakh per annum, which to be noted is highest in the country and given a meagre amount of stipend. On the other hand, Resident Doctors (Senior and Junior Residents) in our neighbouring states like Delhi, and Haryana. and PGI Chandigarh arc having an annual fee of around 20k and getting stipend between Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh per month.โ€

They have also stated that in the majority of the departments of Punjab the pay commission hike had already been implemented while the working resident doctors including the junior and senior residents are still getting their stipend as per the previous pay commission.

โ€œThis environment is very demoralizing and demotivating for doctors working tirelessly in Punjab Government Medical Colleges and hospitals,โ€ reads the letter.
