Indian Army has selected 147 additional women officers for permanent commission. With this addition, the total number of women officers granted permanent commission becomes 424, out of 615 women officers considered for permanent commission in the Army. Results of few women officers have been withheld for administrative reasons and awaiting outcomes of the clarification petition filed by the UOI in the Supreme Court.

All women officers granted permanent commission will undergo special training courses and challenging military assignments to empower them for higher leadership roles in the Indian Army. A batch of 33 women officers has already successfully completed the mid-level tractical orientation course from Army War College Mhow recently.

All women officers who were considered in the Special Number 5 Selection Board and are not granted permanent commission will be eligible for pension subject to serving for a minimum of 20 years.

In consequence with the judgement passed by Supreme Court for grant of permanent commission to women in Indian Army, a Special Number 5 Selection Board for screening women officers for grant of permanent commission was constituted in September 2020. The results were declared in November 2020. Further, in March 2021, the Supreme Court had directed to re-consider some cases of women officers who were not granted permanent commission by laying down the revised parameters.

In 2020, Union Government has decided to grant Permanent Commission to the women officers in the Indian Army. The Ministry of Defence had sanctioned formal letter for grant of Permanent Commission for women officers.

The women officers who have been selected for permanent commission belong to branches such as Engineers, Signals, Intelligence Corps, Army Air Defence, Army Aviation Corps, Army Ordnance Corps, Army Service Corps and Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering.

Through the CDS exam, women are inducted in Officers Training Academy for SSC (Non-Technical) Course. Indian Air Force through AFCAT inducts women officers in Flying and Ground Duty (Technical and Non-Technical) branches. However, they are granted Short Service Commission.
