SSC Explains Reason Behind New Normalisation Method

SSC Explains Reason Behind New Normalisation Method

To ensure fairness and transparency in SSC recruitment, Staff Selection Commission has adopted a new normalisation process for exams held in multiple shifts. Commission has now switched from old average based system to a percentile based equipercentile method, which has been in effect since June 2, 2025.

What is New in SSC Normalisation Process?

New SSC normalisation method is based on equipercentile, which compares candidates as per their percentile rank rather than average marks. For instance, if any candidate secured better than 80 percent of their shift-mates, their SSC score will be matched with another candidate from a different shift who has also outperformed 80 percent of their shift. This ensures that scores show relative performance, not raw marks that could be affected by exam shift difficulty.

This new SSC normalisation method ensures that candidates who may have had more difficult questions are not penalised because of the shift they were assigned. SSC has stated that it conducts fair and transparent exams.

What is Need for SSC Normalisation Method?

SSC recruitment exams are conducted in multiple shifts and difficulty level may not be same in all shifts. Some questions may be easier or harder. To ensure that no candidate is affected by shift they appeared in, SSC uses a normalisation method to calculate scores.

What was old SSC Normalisation Method?

Earlier, SSC used a normalisation process that was based on top scores, average scores, and score variation in each shift. This method calculated an adjusted score for each candidate, allowing for fair comparison for all shifts.
