SSC Explains Reason Behind New Normalisation Method

SSC Normalisation Process: To ensure fairness and transparency in SSC recruitment, the Staff Selection Commission has adopted a new normalisation process for exams held in multiple shifts. The Commission has now switched from the old average-based system to a percentile-based 'equipercentile' method, that has been in effect since June 2, 2025.

What’s New in SSC Normalisation Process?

The new SSC normalisation method is based on the equipercentile, which compares candidates as per their percentile rank rather than average marks. For instance, if a candidate secured better than 80% of their shift-mates, their SSC score will be matched with another candidate from a different shift who has also outperformed 80% of their shift.  This ensures that scores show relative performance, not raw marks that could be affected by the exam shift's difficulty.

This new SSC normalisation method ensures that candidates who may have had more difficult questions are not penalised because of the shift they were assigned. The SSC has stated that it conducts fair and transparent exams. The Commission has also mentioned earlier that it will continue to review and improve its processes to maintain the integrity of its recruitment exams.

What is the Need for SSC Normalisation Method?

SSC recruitment exams are conducted in multiple shifts and the difficulty level may not be the same in all the shifts. Some questions may be easier or harder. To ensure that no candidate is affected by the shift they appeared in, the SSC uses a normalisation method to calculate the scores.

What was the old SSC Normalisation Method?

Earlier, the SSC used a normalisation process that was based on the top scores, average scores, and score variation in each shift. This method calculated an adjusted score for each candidate, allowing for fair comparison for all shifts.
