SC Order on Mandatory TET
The Supreme Court on September 1, 2025 ruled that all government school teachers with more than five years of service left must qualify the TET or face compulsory retirement or resignation. The SC Bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Augustine George Masih issued the order while hearing a petition related to teaching appointments in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, but ruled for entire country.
The court in its order stated that Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET) is mandatory both for aspiring teachers seeking appointment and for in-service teachers seeking promotion. However, the Supreme Court clarified that this order will not apply to minority-status educational institutions.
