Delhi University fees have gradually risen throughout the years as a consequence of recurring increases. However, both professors and students raised concerns that the DU fee hike may make education more expensive, particularly in a publicly funded university.
Delhi University is planning to increase the fees charged from students in the academic year 2025-26. According to official economic projections, the university expects to collect more than Rs 246 crore in revenue from tuition fees in the financial year 2025-26, indicating that additional increases are on planned as academic service costs rise.
DU cites that the tuition fees as a component of its funding sources of the university. Fee collections at the university have gradually risen throughout the years as a result of regular hikes. However, this pattern has sparked criticism from both professors and students, who say that such hikes may make education harder to access, in particular in a publicly funded institution.
A Notable Hike Recorded in DU Revenue
In 2024-25, DU produced Rs 237.3 crore, a gain of INR 33 crore over the same period last year. Several fee categories showed notable expansions, with some going up to 300%. For example, the University Students Welfare Fund jumped from an authorized estimate of INR 3 crore to a real Rs 12 crore in 2024-25, as reported by TOI.
According to the data, this increase is significantly greater than the projected revenue, indicating unforeseen or unexpected fee increases. Similarly, prices for university facilities and services increased by nearly 337%, from roughly the cost of INR 16 crore to INR 70 crore in 2024-25, showing higher-than-expected growth. While the university's budget proposal appears to be intended for increasing fee collections, the substantial increases have raised criticism.
