India to commemorate National Science Day on February 28

On February 28, every year National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated to remember the discovery of the 'Raman Effect'. In the year 1986, Government of India assigned February 28 as National Science Day. Sir CV Raman had announced the discovery of the 'Raman Effect' on this day. For his discovery, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930. Theme-based science communication activities are carried out all over the country on this occasion.

The National Science Day will be commemorated at Vigyan Bhawan this year. “Women in science” will be the theme of the programme. Several awards will be presented by President Ram Nath Kovind for science communication and popularisation as well as for women scientists. Overall 21 awards will be given including Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) awards, SERB Women Excellence Awards, National Award for Young Woman Showing Excellence Through Application Of Technology For Societal Benefits and National Science & Technology and Communication Awards.

Smriti Irani, Minister for Textiles and Dr Harsh Vardhan, Minister of Science and Technology will be the chief guests on the occasion. The occasion will consist of a lecture of renowned scientist Prof Gagandeep Kang, Director of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), Faridabad. She is the first woman FRS of India to talk on the subject of the NSD-2020.

National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST) operates as a top agency to support, catalyse and manage the commemoration of the National Science Day all over the country in scientific institutions, research laboratories and independent scientific institutions linked with the Department of Science and Technology.
