Sikkim government decided to reopen schools from September 6, 2021, for students of Class 9 and above. Students were allowed to attend offline classes only with the consent of their parents.

Sikkim government has ordered the closure of schools again just a week after the reopening of educational institutions. The decision has been taken amid the rising cases of the novel coronavirus among students. Considering the safety of students, the Sikkim government has decided to shut schools and colleges until October 31, 2021.  According to media reports, Education Secretary GP Upadhaya said that at least 5 students tested positive in some schools. Following this, the government has decided to close the educational institutions. Sikkim government decided to reopen schools from September 6, 2021, for students of Class 9 and above. Students were allowed to attend offline classes only with the consent of their parents. Schools reopened in the state after almost six months of online classes. 

To ensure safety, both schools and colleges resumed in the state only with 50% capacity. Further, educational institutions were asked to adhere to proper COVID-19 guidelines such as wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, using hand sanitizers. Upadhaya mentioned that government schools and some private schools reported cases of COVID-19. Government schools in Namthang, South Sikkim, Rhenock, East Sikkim, a private school at Mangan, North Sikkim reported cases of COVID-19.

Several other states have also resumed offline classes and Sikkim isn't the only state where there have been reports of COVID-19 after school reopening. Reports suggest that in Tamil Nadu, at least 30 students as well teachers have been tested COVID-19 positive after schools resumed for Classes 9 to 12 from September 1, 2021. Similarly, reports coming from a nursing institute in Karnataka suggest that more than 60 students, as well as staffers, have tested COVID-19 positive.
