Ministry of education has directed that a database of the information with regard to all international students studying in higher educational institutions (HEls) in India including the details of alumni needs to be created urgently.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the vice-chancellors of all the Universities across the country to prepare a database of international students who are studying in their institutions. The UGC has sought the details by September 15.

"Ministry of education, the government of India has directed that a database of the information with regard to all international students studying in higher educational institutions (HEls) in India including the details of alumni needs to be created urgently," the letter read.

"Hence, all the universities are requested to provide the data of students from the graduate level onwards in the attached format via e-mail to ugcic2@gmail.com positively by September 15, 2021," the letter said.

Higher Education regulator UGC has earlier asked the Universities and colleges across the country to prepare a calendar of events and arrange regular competitions, hackathons, workshops, seminars, etc. on cyber security/ cybercrimes on their respective campuses. UGC also asked them to conduct all these events at regular intervals following COVID-19 protocols and norms of social distancing at their respective educational institutions.

The Universities have also been asked to upload the action taken on the same on the University Activity Portal of UGC i.e. uee.ac. in/uamp. The move aims to strengthen cyber security and to tackle the unforeseen challenges of cybercrime and develop an ecosystem for cyber security in HEIs.

It must be noted that this is not the first time that the UGC has directed the universities and colleges to strengthen their cyber security.
