As per the latest development, the Bengal cabinet has approved the proposal to make Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as chancellor of state-run universities and replace Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. The cabinet has also approved removing the Governor as a Visitor at private universities and replaced this post of Visitor with the state's education minister.

“The cabinet gave its consent to make the chief minister the chancellor of all state-run universities, including agricultural and health varsities,” an official said, as reported by Economic Times.

“It was unanimously decided at a Cabinet meeting held today that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be appointed as Chancellor of all State universities. An Act to this effect will be tabled in the Assembly soon,” Education Minister Bratya Basu told media persons after the Cabinet meeting, as reported by The Hindu.

The government is planning to introduce the proposal as Bill in Assembly in the monsoon session which will start on June 10.

The state government's views differ from the Governor's opinion on a host of issues. However, the functioning of universities and the appointment of Vice Chancellors have been one of the most crucial issues. The Governor in the past expressed disapproval over the nomination of VCs by the government.

Moreover, the state government had given hints a few months ago that it is going to nominate the CM as Chancellor of all universities.
