Yes, you can apply for Master’s degree in psychology from any stream and you can pursue M.Phil in child psychology, and further you can think for Ph.D programs. The Master’s degree is for 2 years and M.Phil is for 2 years, but Ph.D in regular mode is for 3 years from 2016 as per UGC guidelines.

A Master's or doctoral degree in psychology is required to work as a child psychologist. The specialization can be done in developmental psychology, abnormal psychology or adolescent psychology.

To become a child counselor you can pursue B.Sc in Psychology and then you can go for M.Sc in child and adolescent psychology. This way you can become a counselling psychologist.

You need atleast a masters in psychology in India. Most universities take only graduates who had done psychology at the bachelor level into the master level program. So you have to search a lot to find out the university that would take non-psychology graduate into the master in psychology program.
