Swami Vivekananda Institute of Science and Technology (SVIST) of Kolkata is perceived as being a good option for engineering and technical education, especially for students in the regional area. It is affiliated with MAKAUT and is approved by AICTE for its B.Tech, MBA, and Diploma courses, with an emphasis on imparting practical training.

The institute has state-of-the-art laboratories, a good library, and a placement cell that manages to woo in companies such as TCS, Cognizant, and Wipro, but placement packages offered are in the moderate range (INR 3-6 LPA). The faculty are overall experienced, but the level of teaching varies. The campus facilities including hostels and sports ground are operational, even if not impressive. 

The Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology boasts a robust alumni base with graduates who are well-settled in their respective careers and dispersed across the world. Specific names of excellent alumni, though, are not well known. The college points out that its alumni have emerged as vibrant exponents in the field of ceramic research, application, and production and have made meaningful contributions both within India and outside. Some of the distinguished recent alumni are Souvik Karmakar, Sajdul Haque, Tanisha Sarkar, Bratati Ghosh, and Arkadeep Das, who have made a mark in Ceramic Technology, Information Technology, and Computer Science & Engineering.

Direct admission to the Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology is not usually available. Admission to B.Tech programs is mostly through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) on the basis of merit and eligibility. But if there are some vacant seats after the principal counseling rounds, the college can hold decentralized counseling for direct admission, but only for candidates who are domiciled in West Bengal with a valid WBJEE rank. All the requirements made by the regulatory bodies should be fulfilled in order to obtain such admissions. Direct admission is not provided under any circumstances without going through these procedures.

Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology has a full range of campus facilities. The campus features adequately equipped laboratories for every department, a spacious library housing physical and electronic resources, and a Central Computing Centre with an internet facility available 24 hours a day. Hostel facilities are provided to students, along with indoor as well as outdoor sports facilities. The college offers a canteen that dispenses hygienic food, a state-of-the-art auditorium for functions, and large classrooms with projector facilities. Other facilities include a health center, water purifiers, ATM, power backup, and periodic workshops and seminars.
