You should typically start the preparations for the exams 4-5 months before the intended date of the exam. Both CSIR NET and Ph.D. have their own perks. If one wants to pursue their career in lectureship than either you can get it through your NET rank or if your priority is research, then after Ph.D. you may continue with the lectureship. If a candidate is more ambitious and does not want to end up doing Ph.D. then there are more opportunities to explore I. e. Post Doctorate.
