First thing, these two exams are not compulsory. NEET (national eligibility cum entrance test) exam is for getting admission for MBBS a BDS courses in India.
GATE (graduate aptitude test in engineering) is for admission into IITs and other reputed institutions for doing M.Tech /ME degrees after B.Tech /BE
For medical, NEET is compulsory but not GATE.

As you are in first year of your course, you need not to think about GATE exam. You'll start learning your core subjects from your next semester. Develop deep fundamentals and at the same time, aim for higher percentage in your semester exams.
Ideally, you can start preparing for GATE from 3rd year.
