In the case of Government College of Engineering, Thanjavur ( Sengipatti ) in TNEA the closing marks in 2023 were 175 in CSE, 167 in ECE, 150 in EEE and around 136 in Mechanical Engineering in the OC category.

Admission to GCE Thanjavur does not allows direct admissions; everyone must participate in TNEA counselling. Reservations are made for diploma-holders, who cleared the first year through lateral entry through the same state process in the second year. There are no quotas on management or NRI since it is a fully government-run institution. Every student who plans to join the college needs competitive TNEA ranks to gain admission.

GCE Thanjavur does not provide universal 100 percent scholarships to the students but the government and merit based scholarships are available. SC/ST/BC/MBC students can also get Pragati/Saksham, higher education and post-metric scholarships, as applicable. They also take into consideration academic achievement and social economic necessity. Accordingly, the full support is awarded selectively to certain groups of people, but it is not awarded automatically to everybody.

Admission to Government College of Engineering Thanjavur is not possible without TNEA. B.E./B.Tech admissions are done only through the centralized Anna university TNEA counseling each year. There no direct or management quota entries. Another route is that of the lateral entry into the second year through Diploma holders. It is done only after the state counselling conducted by the state on the basis of the rank list prescribed.

Course fees in Government College of Engineering, Thanjavur is very affordable as it is a government college. In the B.E./B.Tech undergraduate courses, annual tuition fee is in the range of INR 8,000-12,000 without hostel and other cost. In case of postgraduate M.E./ M.Tech, the fee is between INR 15,000-20,000 per annum.

Government College of Engineering, Thanjavur offers the UG course such as B.E./B.Tech admissions which is based on Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) using Class 12th marks in PCM subjects. In the case of PG course such as M.E./M.Tech candidates have to either pass TANCET or GATE. One needs a minimum of 50 per cent marks in the qualifying examinations to be eligible. Both the UG and PG programme counseling is done in Anna University.
