Indian Engineering Services (IES) are the civil services that meet the technical and managerial functions of the Government of India. IES examination is conducted by UPSC to fill engineer's requirements in railways, roads, defense, manufacturing, inspection, supply, construction, public works, power, telecommunications, etc. All appointments of IES are to the Group A services i.e. Class I. Candidate selected through IES has opportunities to grow up to top posts in Central Government organisations. The nature of work performed by these technical bureaucrats largely depends on their engineering branch and the service or cadre they are recruited in.
However, they can move to any cadre, organisation, agency, department, ministry or PSU of the Government of India. Civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics and telecommunication engineers have their own separate cadre. IES is the most sought-after careers for the engineering graduates in India.
