While both terms mean a long written form of research content, the differences arise in their uses based on the origin where they are being used. In the UK education system, a PhD is a thesis. While in US-based education systems, a PhD is a dissertation.

The applications forms are first screened by the Committee on Postgraduate Programmes (CPGP) and shortlisted applicants are then called for an entrance test followed by an interview. Both the written test and the interview are usually conducted on the same day and the results are usually announced within a month time.
