IIT Kharagpur conducts admissions to the majority of its courses via the entrance test method. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur West Bengal accepts the scores from the JEE Main exam for admission to its flagship BTech programme. The institute also gives admissions to PG and PhD programmes. Admissions for these are done on the basis of IIT JAM, GATE, and other exams.

No, BTech admissions at IIT Kharagpur accept the scores of the JEE Mains entrance exam to decide a candidate's admission. The exam is followed by the JoSAA counseling to finalise the admission of a candidate. The WBJEE entrance exam is not accepted for any admissions into the IIT Kharagpur courses.

IIT Kharagpur BSc course admissions are done based on candidates’ performance in JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced. Thus, in order to apply for BSc and Integrated MSc at IIT Kharagpur, students must first appear for JEE Mains exam. Students who qualify the JEE Main, are further required to appear for JEE Advanced. After the result of JEE Advanced, students enroll in JoSAA counselling. JoSAA is a centralized counselling portal meant for admissions in top institutes of India. Once the seat is allocated via JoSAA counselling, the candidate must pay partial fees on the portal itself. Further the students have to report at the allocat

The institute has given weightage to all the sections in CAT cut-off for the final shortlisting of the students. For General category candidates, the minimum CAT overall percentile is 90. This is relaxed for reserved category students and stands at 80 percentile for NC-OBC category students and 75 for SC, ST and PwD students. However, for final admisison, there is only an overall cutoff. For General category candidates, minimum CAT percentile is 90. This will be relaxed for category students as per the Government of India norms.

The selection of candidates for admission to the MBA programme at VGSoM (IIT Kharagpur) is a two-step procedure. Applicants, who are shortlisted based on the eligibility criteria are called for an online Personal Interview (PI). Final admission to the MBA programme is then offered on the basis of a cumulative score of the application rating (AR), performance score in CAT 2024, and the candidate's performance in the online PI process.
