Nautical Science refers to the basic knowledge which is required to safely navigate and operate a ship. The subjects include navigation and seamanship. Seamanship is the basic operation of shipboard equipment and tools.

The three-year B.Sc nautical science is a course which is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, which falls under the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. The three-year B.Sc course is strictly residential.

Marine engineering makes an individual a ship's engineer whereas nautical Science trains a person to become a deck officer.

A candidate should pass 10+2 in science stream with Physics, Maths and Chemistry (PCM) and should have obtained 60% of marks. He/She should have obtained a minimum of 50% of marks at 10th or 12th standard. Candidates should be between 17-25 years of age at the time of commencement of the course.

The course is a three-year course and the program is divided into six semesters.
