Pharmacovigilance is the science and the activities that deal with detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse effect and related events.The various activities that are performed according to pharmacovigilance are Periodic safety update report or Risk-benefit evaluation report which is prepared by the companies to submit to the regulatory authority during the first year of commercialization of the drugs.
The Pharmaceutical industry in India is valued at Rs. 90,000 Crore and is growing at the rate of 12 14 % per annum. Exports are growing at 25 % Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) every year. The total export of Pharma products is to the extent of Rs. 40,000 Crore. India is now being recognized as the Global pharmacy of Generic Drugs & has the distinction of providing generic quality drugs at affordable cost. India is also emerging rapidly as a hub of Global Clinical trials & a destination for Drug Discovery & Development.

Pharmacovigilance, in layman's terms, is drug safety. It can be defined as the study and prevention of adverse effects caused by pharmaceutical products. Pharmacovigilance makes it possible to implement quality systems in all pharmaceutical companies that manufacture large amounts of medicine.
Job Prospects:
The starting salary offered to freshers is substantially a function of their educational background and vary year to year and across organizations and domains.
The typical work place hierarchy is as follows:
-The starting level is of a DSA (Drug Safety Associate). DSAs are generally involved in case creation, checking for MSI ( Minimum safety information a patient, a reporter, a suspect drug and an adverse event ), reconciliation and follow-up process, data entry of all information available in the document and medical coding.
-After attaining an experience of 2-3 years, the individual builds the required skill set and can further go to become a DSS (Drug Safety Scientist).
-Further after acquiring a good experience in this sector, an individual can move to writing for PSUR (Periodic Safety Update Report) and PADER (Periodic Adverse Drug Experience Reports) and can also become an Aggregate report scientist.
-An experience of 7-10 years in this field can fetch you the job of a Team-lead or manager.
-If you keep moving further, you can end up acquiring the position of a Director or Vice-President with 9-10 years of experience.
