To be recognised as a licensed Clinical Psychologist in India, you must have completed an MPhil in Clinical Psychology from an RCI approved institute, as this is the minimum qualification for RCI registration.

You can work as a counselor, and/or mental health educator, and/or psychology teacher without an MPhil, but you cannot be a licensed Clinical Psychologist who conducts clinical assessments and therapy.

Clinical psychologists work specifically with the diagnosis of major mental illnesses, such as: depression, anxiety disorders and trauma focused issues. Clinical psychology programs include clinical internship, assessment experience and more therapeutic training.

Counselling psychology focuses on any given maintainable emotional challenges, relationship issues and/or stress management. Counselling psychology is more focused on the client and less diagnostic. Academic training in counselling psychology includes an in-depth focus on talk therapy and supportive counselling.
