Radio Jockeying

Radio Jockeying is a talent based field. Even though no formal educational qualification is required, a degree or at least plus two is generally a pre requisite. The most essential factor for a Radio Jockey is a good voice with the ability to modulate as per the occasion. Apart from that, an RJ should have a clear diction, accurate pronunciation, flare and fluency in the language. They should be able to control the pitches of their voice and learn to use them to the best effect. Another distinguishing characteristic to become a successful radio jockey is the speed of response, good sense of humour, individuality, creativity of mind, spontaneity and an intensive knowledge of music. Successful RJs have the ability to twist and turn their speech according to the situation. Personal Skills - Radio Jockeys should be diplomatic in character as they have to interact with people of different nature. If you're really interested in a radio jockey career, it is very important for you to be spontaneous, spunky and have a pleasing, friendly personality. A good voice and a strong command over language is always a good thing when you're looking to make a career in this field.
To become a good radio jockey, research is the key, like in every other field. You need to listen to good radio jockeys so that you can understand their style and later, with practice, develop your own. You need to understand what the masses need and give them just that.
AIR and radio city have short-term internship programs that you can check with them for industry exposure. There are also some workshops and short-term courses offered by Jamia Milia, Amity University, AAFT and Delhi University that you can attend to gain the skills and knowledge about the profession. All this can be pursued once you complete your 10+2 from a recognized board of education.

Radio Jockeying is a course which makes a candidate capable of voice modulation as well as bring in immediate changes in the script - as and when required. While most of the radio jockeys prefer private jobs as they give an opportunity to explore their creativity better, but government job opportunities also come handy.
One of the best opportunities being working as a radio jockey at All India Radio (AIR) - a Public Service Broadcaster. But one should be ready beforehand that this is not a commercial channel and deals strictly with news/public service information.
Another avenue of government job after completing a radio jockey course can be opened if a person has a Master's Degree/Ph.D or clears NET. Once either of these check boxes are ticked, one can take up the job of a professor/assistant professor in government colleges/universities and teach the students here.
