The career growth of a Railway Protection Force (RPF) Sub Inspector (SI) is based on two main criteria. The criteria are work experience and performance, and inter-department. Selected candidates will have to undergo a rigorous initial training in any one of RPF/RPSF training centre or any other such institution as decided by the Railway Administration. The trainee recruits/cadets will be given a stipend of INR 35,400 plus other allowances as admissible under the Railway Rules during the period of training. Candidates need to pass the final examination at the end of the training and before the final appointment.

According to the 6th Pay Commission recommendations, the grade pay assigned to RPF SI was INR 4200. With this grade pay, the salary was calculated in the pay band of INR 9300-34800. However, after the implementation of 7th Pay Commission, the grade pay system was discontinued. Now, the RPF SI starts at the basic pay level of INR 35400 (Level-6) as per 7th CPC pay matrix.

The gross salary of an RPF Sub Inspector ranges from INR 43,000 to 52,000 depending upon their place of posting. This inclusive salary amount comprises basic pay, grade pay, DA, HRA and other applicable allowances. As basic pay is INR 35,400 according to 7th CPC pay matrix, the other allowances add up substantially to the CTC.
