There are multiple steps in the RPF (Railway Protection Force) Sub-Inspector (SI) selection procedure. After qualifying, candidates go through a Document Verification (DV) process in which their professional and academic histories are reviewed. Finally, to make sure they fulfil the health standards for the position, candidates must pass a medical exam. The purpose of the selection procedure is to find applicants who meet the requirements to work as a Sub-Inspector in the RPF and who are both physically and psychologically fit.

The RPF Sub-Inspector (SI) syllabus covers a wide range of courses to assess applicants' critical thinking, general knowledge, and foundational maths skills. Three areas comprise the exam: Arithmetic, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and General Awareness. Exam subjects for General Awareness include current events, geography, Indian history, economics, and politics. Mathematical ideas like number systems, percentages, averages, and time-distance issues are the main focus of arithmetic. Analogies, coding and decoding, syllogisms, and puzzles are all included in the field of general intelligence and reasoning. The curriculum guarantees that applicants have the information and cognitive skills required for the position. In order to evaluate candidates' physical fitness, there is also a physical efficiency exam (PET) that involves jogging, long jumping, and high jumping.

The career growth of a Railway Protection Force (RPF) Sub Inspector (SI) is based on two main criteria. The criteria are work experience and performance, and inter-department.  The career growth hierarchy for an RPF SI is as follows: Sub-Inspector, Inspector, Circle Inspector, Zonal Inspector, and Deputy Superintendent. The RPF SI exam is conducted annually by the Ministry of Railways. The Railway Protection Force invites applications for recruitment to the post of Sub-Inspector in Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) of various zones. Selected candidates for the post of RPF SI are recruited in Level 6 of the 7th CPC pay matrix. 

RPF SI exam is conducted by the Ministry of Railways to select eligible male and female candidates for recruitment to the post of Sub-Inspectors (SI) in Level 6 of 7th CPC in Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Forces (RPSF) in various zones of Indian Railways. The cut-off marks of the RPF SI exam will be released along with the scorecard separately for the Computer-Based Test (CBT) and final selection. To qualify the CBT, candidates need to secure the category-wise qualifying marks and overall RPF SI Cut off. There are no qualifying marks for PET/PMT, however, it is mandatory to qualify it. The cutoff is released separately for male and female candidates.
