SDSU is nationally recognised for academic excellence and has been ranked 65 among public universities in the US by US News. Also, US News has ranked it #151 in its national university ranking for 2023. SDSU has been ranked in the top 35 in the US for ethnic diversity by US News.

International students are required to submit the following details while applying to San Diego State.
- Completion of high school/secondary level.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 (B grade or 80 percent) or higher.
- English Proficiency proof:
- TOEFL – Passing score is 80 iBT/550 paper or higher.
- IELTS – Passing overall score is 6.5 or higher.
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) – Passing score is 58 or higher.
- Duolingo English Test score of 105 or higher

GRE scores are not required for Fall 2023 admissions but may be submitted at the applicant's discretion. International students need to submit proof of English proficiency to secure admission at San Diego State.

A bank statement from the applicant or their sponsor is required. It must show existing funds (either in home currency or U.S. dollar amounts) in the account. Statements must be on official bank letterhead, dated within the last three months, and include the account holder's name and the account type. If applicants have a scholarship, a personal bank statement is not needed, and a letter of financial guarantee is required.

With a GPA of 3.77, SDSU requires its applicants to be above average in their high school. Along with this GPA, candidates would also need to score at least a mix of A's and B's, with focus on getting A's than B's. Yes, if students are already in the USA on a tourist visa (B1/B2), they can enroll in the Intensive English Communications (IEC) Program on a part-time (15 hours or less per week) basis.
