Sikkim Manipal University is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). It was established in 1995 in Gangtok, Sikkim. Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) offers 16 undergraduate, 18 postgraduate, diploma in medical biotechnology, and doctoral courses in all fields. Sikkim Manipal University has divided these courses in the two campuses- Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS). SMIT requires applicants to have obtained at least 55% of the possible points in their final recently qualifying exam in the relevant field to get to be admitted. Still, for B.Tech programs, the candidate's performance in the SMIT entrance exam or other recognized entrance examinations, for example the JEE/MET/SMIT Online Test, and for M.Tech programs, the candidate's performance in the SMET test or a valid GATE score, determines the admission process.

Based on the scores of the MET (Manipal Entrance Test), the cut-off marks for Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) are determined.
