The selection criteria for the B.E. / B.Tech courses at Tamilnadu College of Engineering (TCE) are mainly based on the candidate's performance in entrance exams. For candidates seeking admission under the Tamil Nadu state quota, the admission process is carried out through the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) based on the candidate's Class 12 marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with no separate entrance exam required. The score of JEE Main will be taken into consideration for candidates applying under All India quota. The college follows the reservation policy of Tamil Nadu government in respect to SC, ST, OBC, and other categories.

Eligibility criteria for admission to B.E./B.Tech in Tamilnadu College of Engineering are: 10+2 with 50% aggregate (45% in case of candidates belonging to reserved category) and having Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational as compulsory subjects. Candidates have to appear for counselling in TNEA, which is the short form for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions. Cut-off marks for admission are: General category-145-197; BC category - 133-190; MBC category - 120-175; SC/ST category - 90-155. Lateral entry scope: 50% aggregate in Diploma in any branch for general categories and 45% for other categories. Reservation: 69% for Tamil Nadu students and 31% for other states. Seats 1200 (B.E./B.Tech). Duration: 4 years (8 semesters). Intake through TNEA counselling 90%, Management quota 10%.
