Presently, 46 colleges are affiliated to Tripura University Suryamaninagar. The campus of the university covers an area of 75 acres. The varsity has 46 departments and 158 faculty members offering 61 programmes.

Tripura University presents some of the following degree courses: BBA, B.Sc, BA, MBA, MCA, M.Com, etc. Students with 10+2 from some known institutes with a minimum of 45% scores can apply for bachelor's degree courses. And for PG Courses, the candidates must have a graduation degree.

At present, there are more than 3690 students studying under this Directorate of Distance Education (DDE), which is by itself indicative of the popularity and reliability of the Directorate of Distance Education, Tripura University, among the common mass in general, as well as among students in particular of the State.

• In 1937, Bir Bikramkishore Manikya, the last Maharaja of Tripura, had planned for establishing a college under the “Vidyapattan Scheme”.
• On 7 May, 1937, Maharaja Bir Bikram laid the foundation-stone of the college under the “Vidyapattan Scheme”.
• Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) College, the first degree college in the State, started functioning under the University of Calcutta only in 1947
• Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya at Kailasahar in 1950 at private initiatives and also Belonia College at Belonia in 1964 and Ramthakur College at Agartala in 1967.
• In 1982 the three private degree colleges of Tripura were taken over by the state government.
• Tripura was sanctioned by the UGC in 1976 a post-graduate wing of the Calcutta University, named Calcutta University Post graduate Centre (CUPGC).
• The foundation-stone was laid at Suryamaninagar campus on 18 December, 1985 by Dasaratha Deb, the legendary leader of the historic Janasiksha (People’s Education) movement and the-then Deputy Chief Minister – cum Education Minister of Tripura.
• The University Established in 2 October, 1987
• Tripura University has been converted to a Central University w.e.f 2nd July,2007 under the Tripura University Act,2006 as enacted by the Parliament.

Remarks : 

Tripura University is offering many courses: M.A, M.Sc, M.Tech, BBA, P.G.D, M.Com, B.Ed, etc. Here admission process is not easy. Before taking admission we need to take and fill up the admission form in the office, after that we need to give the entrance exam for the main course. After passing the exam only we can take admission here. The fee structure is different for every course. The fees for MA are 15,000 to 28,000.

Admission : 

Admission Criteria is that the Candidates should have passed Class XII with at least 45% marks in aggregate. There is a 5% relaxation of marks. In the case of ST/SC/OBC category students. In addition, there will be an admission test conducted by the selection committee also.
