First of all clear your basics. Start from ncert books from 6th to 12th as they are good for basic knowledge of the student on the given topic of UPSC. Then go for coaching. Give more time to self study as it is more important than coaching.

Start with reading NCERT books of class 6th to class 12th, as they are good for basic knowledge of the subjects then move to higher books and read the Hindu daily.

Yes, the books are very helpful. Rest, it is up to you whether you like to learn from books or you think that classroom trainings are better. Some people like to learn under the direct supervision of a teacher and in that case, you can opt for coaching classes. If you are looking for some good books for UPSC preparation:

The aspirants who qualify the entire examination (3 stages) come in the merit. Once they come in merit, they are given ranks according to marks scored in the examination.
