The Vellore Institute of Technology Research Entrance Examination (VITREE) exam pattern for PhD applicants is as follows -
The VITREE is conducted online, and the examination lasts two hours.
A total of 100 MCQs will be asked in the examination.
For each correct answer, 1 mark will be rewarded. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
The VITREE question paper for PhD consists of the following questions: (Technical - 70 questions, English communication skills - 15 marks, and statistics and probability - 15 marks)

Foreign nationals applying for VITREE PhD admission must meet the following criteria -
Candidates of foreign nationality who hold degrees from Indian universities are seeking admission to research programmes with the necessary clearance from the Government of India (The Ministry of Human Resource Development).
Must possess a valid visa
Candidates must have completed 10+2+4+1 for PhD in engineering.
Must have excellent English communication speaking skills.

Yes, GATE-qualified candidates can apply for the VITREE exam. For that, candidates must have a good academic record in their bachelor's degree. The minimum qualifying percentage is 75% or an aggregate CGPA of 8.0 on a 10-point scale. Candidates must go through the VITREE criteria before applying.

PhD in architecture and planning is offered only at VIT Vellore campus. Candidates who want to apply to architecture and planning must have a bachelor's degree in architecture and planning, followed by a master's degree in architecture/design/planning/building engineering and management or equivalent with a minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale. The degree must be completed on a regular or full-time basis.

Candidates applying for VITREE 2026 (PhD in engineering) must meet the following qualification criteria -
Master's degree in engineering/technology in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA on a 10-point scale
M.Sc computer science, M.Sc (IT), and MCA degree holders are eligible to apply for PhD programme in computer Science engineering/information technology.
For Direct PhD admissions, graduates must have an outstanding academic record in their bachelor's degree with a minimum of 75% marks or a CGPA of 7.5 on a 10-pointscale.

Candidates who have registered for the VITREE 2026 exam will be eligible to download the admit card. The VITREE hall ticket will be available online on the official website. Candidates must download the admit card, as they serve as an identity proof and an essential document for the further admission process. The hall ticket will contain details regarding the exam, test paper date and time, instructions, etc.
It is mandatory to reach the exam hall one hour before the commencement of the exam. No candidates will be allowed to enter the test centre after that.
