It is first engineering college in Odisha.It is the oldest engineering institute in Odisha, founded as the University College of Engineering (UCE) in 1956. UCE Burla was officially renamed as Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology on 12 February 2009, as a result of a move by the Government of Odisha to accord it with the status of a unitary university.

Along with engineering curriculum, they are teaching skills used in industry to make the candidate industry ready engineer.
