What is the meet all about?

In an effort to nurture talent in science and give a new beginning to the lives of the students, DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and DST (Department of Science and Technology), government of India, shortlisted 18 Indian students to take part in the annual Lindau Nobel Lectures. They are among 500 students selected across the globe. These students will get an opportunity to interact with some of the best scientific brains as they meet 27 Nobel laureates in Physics.

Physics is the theme of this 62nd meeting of Nobel Laureates at Lindau, Germany. At the meet, not only will the experts discuss pure scientific theory but they will also share their solutions to problems of world energy shortages and the challenge of climate change.

What will the Indian students garner from this meet?

  • Besides a week’s tour of first-rate laboratories in Germany, students will get a chance to meet experts.
  • This Indo-German collaboration manifests friendship and as a part of it, students will get a chance to work together with their peer groups from around the world and form long-term associations.
  • This networking will endow students with myriad opportunities for scientific paper writing as students will interact with institutional heads and researchers at the meet.
  • Five students out of the 18 selected will be given grants by the DGF on first-come-first-served basis. This grant will encompass a 3-month stay in Germany to work in a lab of their choice from among the ones they will visit during their tour.

Sahal Kaushik, the youngest Indian student in the selected batch of 18 students, is all of 16 years of age. He has got through 3rd year of the M.Sc Integrated Physics course at IIT Kanpur.

The meet is scheduled between July 1 and 6. Subsequently, there are plans to set up an integrated German House of Science and Innovation (DWIH) in New Delhi in October this year to rope in all German scientific, academic institutions and universities and research funding organizations under one roof. This center aims to play a vital role for students for planning their higher research with German collaboration either in Germany, in India or both. Read complete story…
