New bill to check fake universities

Acknowledging this situation and delving more into the issue, BJP president Nitin Gadkari wrote a letter to HRD minister Kapil Sibal.
He indicated how each of these universities was recognising way too many colleges and that there was a need to restrict the number of affiliated colleges to not more than a hundred.
He also pointed out that there were 12-odd bogus universities operating in the country; jeopardizing the future of enrolled students. Responding to the letter, Kapil Sibal said that a bill has been drafted to bring in stringent punishment.
The minister believes that the existing laws are inadequate to resolve these issues. He has infact sought the support of the opposition party in passing the proposed law Prohibition of unfair practices in technical education institutions, medical educational institutions and universities bill 2010.
The bill would check these fraudulent practices prevalent in the field of education. Moreover, the bill is likely to hike the penalty in the range of Rs. 1,000 to Rs 50 lakh on a bogus university. (Read complete story)
