The scheme is based on the academic performance of the students in their immediate previous semester examination. Moreover, the campus also offers scholarships to women cadets, economically weak students, and state/ government aided scholarships.

Admission to the majority of UG and PG courses in Indian Maritime University is through IMUCET. But MBA and M.Tech candidates can apply on the basis of CAT, MAT, CMAT, GATE, CUET-PG, or PGCET marks. PhD admissions are through individual offline tests and interviews conducted by IMU. Core maritime programmes do not have admission via direct entry.
