M.A. in Sociology at JNU offers a comprehensive programme with a wide range of courses, including sociological theories, research methodology, and other areas of study. The programme has a strong focus on Indian society, with courses on social stratification, family life and kinship, polity, economy, religion, urban life, population, education, and social change. The Centre also offers optional courses, scholarships, and a number of merit-cum-means scholarships. To qualify for the MA degree, students are required to complete a total of 16 courses, out of which 11 are compulsory, and obtain a CGPA of 4 at the end of the program.

SC/ST and Person with Disability (PWD) candidates who have passed the qualifying examination, irrespective of their percentage of marks, are eligible to appear in the Entrance Examination. Additionally, OBC candidates are eligible for 27% reservation of seats, and the candidates are required to submit a valid OBC non-creamy layer certificate.

According to the JNU e-Prospectus 2025-26, candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/PWD category who are selected on their own merit with General Category candidates are not counted under reserved quota. The reservation policy of the Government of India is applicable to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/EWS/PWD categories.
