Established in 1987, Kuvempu University is a state public university. Kuvempu University has more than 59 departments that collectively offer more than 80 courses at UG, PG, and doctoral levels. The university is an affiliating university established by the act of the Karnataka State Legislature. The university is recognised by the UGC and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Kuvempu University has ranked between 101 and 150 in the Overall category of NIRF Rankings 2024. The university also offers distance education. There is no such provision for direct admission to any of the programmes at Kuvempu University. The university course admissions are both merit and entrance-exam-based. For MBA and MCA, the university fills the unfilled seats through university entrance exam. KU also conducts an entrance test for admission to BPEd and MPEd courses. Once the selection is over, Kuvempu University releases a selection list to announce the names of selected candidates. 

At the undergraduate level, the university offers BCA, BA, BBA, and various other courses to students. At the postgraduate level, Kuvempu University offers MCom,MA, MCA and various other courses to students. Kuvempu University also provides PhD courses.
