The outbreak of the novel coronavirus followed by multiple lockdowns in order to control the virus spread ruptured the academic activities in the entire country. The school education got disrupted and in order to prevent academic loss the situation made the educational institutes to resort to online modes of classes and teaching. In the wake of the same, Karnataka State government sought the help of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to impart education through television in the state.
Primary and Secondary Education Minister Suresh Kumar in a letter to Union I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar wrote, "We request you to provide minimum three channels on the Doordarshan network exclusively for the Department of Public Instruction, Government of Karnataka,"

Karnataka’s education department also had a discussion with Prasar Bharti officials, who assured 3+3 hours timeslots on the education channel of the state, Chandana. However, this allotment is on a cost basis. The minister added, "We have also made all the necessary arrangements for content creation by the teachers.”
As per Kumar, after reviewing all the technological options the department of public instruction came to the conclusion that TV is one of the best methods for home learning as it is there in almost 95% of the households. The state operates government schools in nine languages which include Kannada, English and Urdu also.
The minister said, "To cater to all the students, and considering a long-term strategy to run schools by maintaining social distancing, we are in immediate need of minimum three exclusive channels to teach through TV.” The Government of Karnataka asked IB ministry for help as it is lacking funds to meet the capital expenditure requirements for this set up.
