College’s social & cultural activities have helped me fight the fear of public speaking, says Shivani Chowdhary
During my school days, I wanted to become a marketing professional. I was sure that I wanted to opt for commerce stream in high school because of the subjects such as Business Management, Accountancy and Finance, and Economics. I was excited and curious to learn these new subjects. After schooling, I completed my graduation in BCom. This was the first step towards the achievement of my goal.
Graduation provided me with theoretical knowledge but to put it into practice and improve my skills, I realised Post Graduation Diploma in Management (PGDM) was the best option for further studies. The course helps in gaining practical exposure. I chose to apply for admission at JIMS Kalkaji - Jagannath International Management School. This is the third college that I applied to. I searched and read about this college on various platforms and through alumni. My cousin was also studying in this college and that’s how I ended up in JIMS Kalkaji to do PGDM. Choosing this college JIMS Kalkaji to pursue PGDM was a good decision because I am liking the design of curriculum which also includes practical exposure in the form of guest lectures and industrial visits. The faculty members are always ready to guide you in every possible way they can and they always motivate us to do the best.
The college is having a track record of 100 per cent placements. It’s a reputed institute with good infrastructure, experienced faculty, industrial connect. For admission in JIMS, I appeared for MAT entrance exam in which I scored 79 per cent. I was eligible for admission as well as for 10 per cent scholarship. I gave a telephonic interview and got selected. I searched a lot and took reviews from students who were studying there and I found JIMS Kalkaji the right choice for me.
The course timings for PGDM is usually 9 am-5:30 pm. I like to attend all the lectures because of the trained and experienced faculty here. They are experts in their domain and thus, help us with a broader perspective of any situation, making us look at the bigger picture. JIMS Kalkaji is a management School, so It is very disciplined and strict in context to attendance. All the students need to have a minimum of 75 per cent attendance which has to be maintained throughout the trimester. The college has a lot of social clubs which helps boosting confidence in students. The institute regularly invites industry professionals to share their experiences and challenges faced during their corporate careers.
I am a part of the Marketing Club, HR club and NSS Club. I have participated in organising various seminars and a marketing event (Markathon). Institute also focuses on social responsibilities such as donating clothes, books to Old Age Homes, Safai Abhiyan in which I also helped in organising these events.
This college makes students corporate ready by giving exposure to the corporate world and enhancing the skills of each student through personality development sessions and online courses. As far as my experience is considered, I feel I am ready to face the corporate world. I have learnt leadership skills and team management skills. I had fear of public speaking resulting in which I used to find interviews and group discussions as hurdles. But with so many social and cultural activities here and personality development sessions, I have successfully overcome my fear. I am working on my skills every day so that I can turn my dream of becoming a marketing manager into reality.
