JIMS’ academic results and great alumni network attracted me to be part of it, says Alan
Speaking wasn’t my forte up until class 11. I used to be a shy middle bencher, it all changed one day when my English teacher loved my speech that we had to present as a part of an assignment and gave me an opportunity to anchor the Christmas celebrations at school. I was enthralled at the opportunity that was given to me and after the success of that event, there was no looking back. I participated in a lot of speech and debate competitions and excelled in all of them which boosted my confidence even further. I wanted to pursue a career where I could turn my passion of speaking into my profession, so my English teacher suggested to me about Mass Communication and motivated me to go for it as a career option. Being an average student, I found Science stream a hard nut to crack so I opted for Commerce without Mathematics in class 11 and 12. Being from Commerce, stream my parents wanted me to choose CA or some course related to Commerce background. I told them about the discussion I had with my teacher and how I wanted to pursue a career in entertainment where I can utilise my oratory skills. As destiny had it, I got enrolled into JIMS - Jagannath Institute of Management Sciences, Vasant Kunj for Bachelors of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Although I already knew that I wanted to take admission for Mass Communication but choosing a perfect college was something that I, my parents and my relatives were equally worried about. JIMS’ academic results and great alumni network attracted me to be part of it. I did not take any coaching classes but started preparing for the entrance test by making it a habit to read the newspaper daily, being aware of the latest happenings around the globe as well as brushing up my basic General Knowledge. There were two rounds for the admission - the first being the written test, the second being the personal interview with the HOD of the department of the course I had applied for. I was lucky enough to crack both the rounds and get into JIMS.
Being from Delhi, any campus from Delhi University or IP University was always on top of the list, but I am happy being a part of JIMS institution and this place has turned into a place that I can proudly call as my second home.
In college, I try to spend most of my time learning new things. I am a part of my college’s theatre club as well as I try to contribute to the best of my abilities in every event my college organises, be it as an anchor or a performer or just overall support. I like to push my boundaries and check where I stand in terms of competition. Another thing I would like to explore is the IT sector as machines always fascinated me, So I would want to give it a try and see what is the fuss all about and is it really that great the way people make it sound.
My college experiences have helped me transform into a version of myself that I am really proud of and I am sure that it will stay with me for the rest of my life. Being in college, allowed me to meet people of different backgrounds, different cultures and different mindsets. It enabled me to open my mind clearly and be open to differences as well. The college experience has also enhanced my skill sets and made me more confident about myself by helping me get over my stage fear and fear of interviews. It will definitely be beneficial in the long run will help me to become a successful person in life.
