IIT Bhilai is considered a competitive institution, but generally less so than the older, more established IITs, making it a relatively good option for those who aim for a good Engineering education but may not have the highest JEE Advanced rank. The cutoff ranks for IIT Bhilai have varied over the years, but generally, the closing ranks for the general category in Computer Science Engineering (CSE) have been around the 5,000-6,000 range. Therefore, once an applicant fulfills IIT Bhilai admission requirements i.e., competitive grades, standardised test scores, technical language requirements as well as relevant documents, they are most likely to secure an admission in the institute. However, students must not take this lightly and apply to the institute within the deadlines in order to get enrolled as a student.

To decide which is a better choice of BTech, students must weigh both options based on various parameters such as placement, ranking, fees, and more. As per the NIRF ranking, IIT Bhilai has been ranked in the 73rd position, while IIT Dharwad was ranked in the 101-150 position. Moreover, as per the 2023 placement records, the highest package offered at IIT Dharwad stood at INR 18.53 LPA, which was less in IIT Bhilai, i.e, INR 14 LPA.
