Be Somebody say Top Fashion Designers inspiring students at Pearl Academy Event
Pearl Academy conducted a special talk session called “Be Somebody”, graced by industry stalwarts such as Anju Modi, who is in talks these days for her exquisite designs in Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani, International Woolmark Prize winner Suket Dhir and Rahul Mishra whose designs have been showcased at Paris Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week.
The session held today in Delhi saw industry experts share their stories to help design students at Pearl become champions of tomorrow.
Be Somebody Talk by Anju Modi
The session started with Anju Modi talking about her journey and how at the start of her career she had no money but still she took her passion for design forward and now when she looks back at her journey she does not remember any hardships she faced. She further advised students at Pearl to – Be passionate about their work, their design and they will definitely be successful.
Modi also shared that, “I was inspired with Indian textiles and so at the start of my career itself I did a Bharat Bhraman, right from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and nothing much has changed, even today, if given a choice I would prefer going to Kutch (Gujarat) rather than Paris to get inspiration for my designs”.
She also advised students to pay attention to everything that is around them and gain inspiration from local artisans. Modi shared that she learnt the art of storytelling from small-time weavers and till date she tries to build a story around all her creations.
Be Somebody Talk by Suket Dhir
Next, Suket Dhir took the ramp to guide students on how he became the famous name that he is today. Known to design comfortable yet stylish everyday-clothes for men, Dhir had everyone in splits when he shared how confused he was at the start and did not even realise that “design” was his calling in life. He further asked Pearlites to not feel stressed if they are not able to figure right at the start what they want to do; even he did BCom (partially), BCA, a job at a call centre after which on a friend’s suggestion he joined NIFT for a design course.
Dhir advised students to be themselves and have their individuality intact because this is what will reflect in their collections and this is what will make them stand apart from their peers.
Be Somebody Talk by Rahul Mishra
Finally, Rahul Mishra, the man who has been making waves for his creations in India as well as abroad took the dais. An alumnus of NID Ahmedabad, Mishra shared that he received a sound foundation in design from NID, however, as per him the Milan Fashion Week shaped his future.
Mishra further shared that he did not become successful overnight, he failed many times but he did not let that deter him from achieving his goal. Thus, he said that success in design (as a field) does not depend only on talent and skills. One needs to be persistent and have the right attitude if they want to achieve success.
Further, Mishra asked fashion design students at Pearl to have idols and study their work and learn from them at every step. He also advised students to be like a sponge and absorb all that is going on around them and learn from the best in the industry and incorporate these learnings when they design their own collections.
