Coronavirus: IIT Ropar to provide online courses to students

On Wednesday, the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar declared that it would offer online courses to students as classes in the college were postponed due to the fear of coronavirus pandemic. According to a statement issued by the institute, this is the first-ever attempt of IIT Ropar to record approximately 150 courses for MTech, BTech, MSc and PhD students. The recorded lectures can only be availed by the students registered in a chosen course. The institute will offer recorded lectures to students in the first phase.

The statement further informed that this would be released with synchronised audio. The recorded lectures would consist of only those content matched with audio and not the video. This would help decrease the size of the file that can be easily availed by any student residing in any part of the country. After this, IIT Ropar would begin operating in phase two. As a part of this, it would let the students interact with the faculty to solve problems.

According to IIT Ropar Director S K Das, IIT Ropar has long been planning to offer online courses using the model of massive open online courses. He further stated that the present circumstance demands such a scheme at a huge scale to offer theory classes to students at the same time creating a pool of online lectures. As of now, the courses will be a fractional solution to cover the academic loss. Coronavirus outbreak has led many institutions to shut down their operations for an indefinite time period.
