JEE Advanced 2014 commenced today on May 25, 2014 and was held at around 99 centres across the country. While Paper 1 was successfully held from 9 am to 12 pm, Paper 2 is to be conducted from 2 pm to 5 pm on the same day. The exam, which is a gateway to secure a seat in the premier IITs, is jointly conducted by the zonal IITs including IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee.

To get a first hand information about how the exam was, shiksha.com spoke to few students who took the exam today.

Paper 1:

According to Shivi Vats, a student of Salwan Public School, Mayur Vihar who scored 164 in JEE Main 2014, the Advanced paper was lengthy. He said, “For me Maths was the lengthiest out of the three subjects, if not difficult. Though, we had to apply direct formulae to derive the answers but still the paper was very lengthy. I attempted Physics and Chemistry first, and since the Maths paper was lengthy, I got little time to solve it.  If only I knew this was the case, I would have attempted Maths first".

Another student, Kishor Jeliya from Rajasthan had similar views. He said, “I can’t predict the difficulty level of Paper 2, but Paper 1 was definitely difficult and lengthy. I am now tensed for the second paper".

Talking about the format of Paper 1 and the difference between Paper 1 and Paper 2, Shivi shared, “Both the papers are of 180 marks that totals to 360 marks overall. There are 20 questions each from all the three subjects (60 questions in total) - Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Each question carries three marks and there is no negative marking".

He further added, “The 20 questions comprise of two different kinds of questions. While there are 10 Multiple Answer Questions, the other 10 are Integer type of questions where you need to solve and derive a value that ranges from 0-9. I think the only difference between the two papers is the pattern".
