Thus, here it is important for candidates to understand the meaning of terms such as percentage, percentile and how normalisation of JEE marks is actually done.
JEE Main 2015: How to calculate Percentile Score
To start with, it is important to note that percentile and percentage of marks is totally different from each other. So, while percentage is a number calculated out of 100, percentile “is the value below which a certain percent of observations fall. For example, the 40thPercentile is the value or score below which 40 Percent of the observations may be found”, informs the JEE Main 2015 official website.
Percentile score in JEE Main 2015 will inform the candidate about how many aspirants have lower scores as compared to him/her in JEE Main exam or in the board/equivalent exam.
So, the formula to calculate percentile score of a candidate in JEE Main 2015 is as follows:
To understand this concept better let us take an example wherein we assume that in a specific board 13,918 candidates registered for the exam but only 13,711 actually appeared for the examination.
In such a scenario, if a JEE Main 2015 aspirant has scored 90% marks in his Class XII exam and it is found that a total of 13,615 (other) candidates have a score lower than him/her (that is, lower than 90%), then the percentile score of such a candidate would be:
So, here it is clear that the percentage (of marks) scored by the candidate is 90% and his/her percentile score is 99.30.
JEE Main 2015: Normalisation of marks
Normalisation of marks scored by a candidate in the qualifying exam will be based entirely on the position at which the aspirant stands in his/her Board. Thus, a candidate’s percentile score in the board will directly contribute to the aspirant’s normalised marks.

- Language
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Any one subject from – Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or Technical Vocational Subject
