23 engineering colleges to shut down in Hyderabad
With few number of students seeking admission to technological courses, 23 colleges in Hyderabad will shut down next year. As per latest information, these colleges have already approached the All India Council for Technical Education in order to seek permission for their closure.
It is assumed that the reason behind the reduction in the count of students seeking admission is their tailed off interest in the technical courses. The closure will lead to a reduction of 4000 engineering seats in the State of Telangana. Another reason that has emerged for the closure is the bankruptcy of various engineering colleges in Hyderabad. These colleges were facing difficulty in the payment of arears of fees by the Telangana Government.
The engineering colleges are required to pay an amount of Rs.5.6 crores every month, for their smooth functioning. Earlier the college used to take loans for this purpose but demonetization has made the process difficult and the chances for the colleges to seek loans have become null. The Government of Telangana has not yet released their part of funds to the colleges, for the academic year 2016-17.
In 2012, 81 engineering colleges in Andhra had pulled their shutters down. Of these, 23 colleges had found no student wanting to take admission after the first and second phase of counseling following EAMCET 2012. The situation was no better in the remaining 58 colleges with less than 10 students joining each branch. As the colleges had to shut operations, these students were transferred to other colleges.
Spot admissions have been conducted for transferring the students to other engineering colleges from such colleges with negligible admission rate, while some colleges have cancelled admission into certain branches. Approximately 5000 students had been transferred to other colleges.
The college management is concerned as they cannot run the colleges with negligible number of students. According to educationalists, unqualified faculty and lack of hostel facility are some of the reasons for the less number of students taking admission in certain colleges.
On the other hand, technical education department had decided to conduct taskforce inspections in Pharmacy, MBA and MCA colleges. 119 colleges were inspected in the first phase, whereas, 684 engineering colleges will be inspected by the end of December 2012.
