What I learned from my college life: Divija Gupta
Joining a college is a dream come true for almost every kid, whether in India or abroad. Furthermore, hearing about how exciting college life was from seniors, urged me to get enrolled in any of the top higher education institutions.
But, a college is a college. A college life is where we are responsible for making or breaking our careers. It’s just the exposure we need, that grown-up environment we all wish to explore and experiences that we want to cherish. I being a part of one of the colleges affiliated to GGSIPU (Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University) feel privileged to get admission in BTech in Computer Science, a stream that many just dream being a part of. Though I attempted and cracked IPU CET twice, I was happy to get the stream as well as college of my choice in the second time.
I was pretty clear about taking up Science in my XI standard as Chemical Compounds, Molecules, Gravity and Mathematics were topics that held my interest. It was really difficult to part ways from these topics, so for sure, Science was my topmost priority and I was pretty confident too, keeping in mind my Class X grades. And, after clearing numerous entrance exams and that too twice, I dropped a year just to get admission in IIT (Indian Institute of Technology). But still, I was happy and satisfied that I got what I had always dreamt of. So I looked forward towards pursuing the course and most importantly, stayed with my family because I couldn’t cope with home sickness.
As I said earlier, there were numerous entrance exams that I gave. I cleared some of them but I had to shift out of Delhi which was not convincing enough to take a plunge, and that’s when I went for the college which made me stayed back in this beautiful city. Thus, I got enrolled in my present college, Bhagwan Parshuram Institute of Technology in my desired branch, after two years of vigorous coaching during XII standard and post that when I got myself enrolled in one of the colleges of Delhi University. Yes, I have lived that over-the-top life of a so-called DU student but the experience there was amazing too. That actually formed a base for me when I later got admission in Engineering as there were a lot of similarities, along with obvious dissimilarities. During all this, what I learned was that you should always work hard towards achieving your dreams and never sit back thinking things will happen by themselves. You have to work yourself to get things done. Practice hard and get what you want from this life. Don’t do something just because your friends are doing or parents are saying, instead, do something that attracts you, becomes your passion and makes you live your life to the fullest.
Currently, I am in 3rd year of my college and I have had a whole lot of things to learn, explore and make the best out of everything. In this journey of first to third year, I did sometimes realise that maybe this is not what I had dreamt of. Though Science was love, it maybe not the case in Engineering. I don’t get programming languages, instead, I love to write, and thus, always say that I am a “potential” engineer by profession, but a writer by passion. Having worked with different companies over a span of 1.5 years, I have not only earned a few bucks as pocket money, but have also gained experience that I can boast about. Now people actually know that Divija Gupta is a writer and she writes really well. This is what makes me feel satisfied and relieved. Literature is one thing that interests me more and words being penned down on paper is something that de-stresses me a lot.
I don’t know what Engineering has in store for me in this final year, but something that I really want to convey to all the upcoming engineers is that don’t get engrossed in those technicalities so much so that you leave behind certain things in life. Be passionate about what you are doing, but at the same time, enjoy your life. Even if enjoying means developing software and applications or constructing robots, go for it. But also, pay attention to little things that are really a part of your life and you.
With still a year to go, I have a lot to explore. I am hoping to make the best out of my last year of college, but let’s see what happens.
