UPSEE 2014: Student reactions

UPSEE 2014 (Uttar Pradesh State Eligibility Exam) 2014 concluded today, on April 20, 2014 with over lakhs of students taking the exam at various exam centers in Uttar Pradesh (UP). Besides UP, the exam was held at two other centers outside UP.

Conducted by the Gautam Buddh Technical University (GBTU), Lucknow, the exam is used for admissions to engineering and other professional courses offered by GBTU and Mahamaya Technical University (MTU) along with institutes affiliated to these Universities.

UPSEE 2014 for engineering courses was a three hour paper and was held from 7:30 am to 10: 30 am. Divided into three sections – Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, the paper had 150 questions in totality.

Shiksha.com caught up with few students who took the exam today to get first hand information about how their exam went, their expectations and more.

Difficulty level- Overall

Most of the students we spoke to felt that UPSEE 2014 was easier than expected; easier than the last year. Shivi Vats, an aspirant from Delhi said, “The paper was 90 percent was easy and since there was no negative marking, I attempted all the 150 questions. However, I feel that every subject had both easy and difficult questions (not difficult but lengthy) and the time given to solve the questions was less. We were supposed to solve 50 questions in one hour but that didn’t suffice. Basically, 40 questions in each section were easy and 20 were lengthy.

Another student Shubham shared, “The paper was easy and it was a good experience taking the exam.  I expected the paper to be tough like last year but to my surprise it wasn’t and I was happy.

Shubham Arora, an engineering aspirant from Mathura, who gave a second attempt at the exam said, “The paper was overall easy and I solved around 148 questions. Any average would be able to score 80 above and any board student would be able to score 120 and above.

Difficulty level- Subject Wise

A lot of students reported that though Maths wasn’t tough but had lengthy questions

Shubham said, “I think Physics was the easiest and Maths was lengthy. Though Chemistry wasn’t tough but it had strange questions. There was a concept of normality which I think was new to me”.

However for Shubham Arora, Physics was the toughest amongst all the three sections. He said, “Chemistry was easy and had short questions, Physics was tough and Maths, though wasn’t tough but had lengthy questions”.

He further added, “There was a question from Matrix in Maths that was wrong. I tried solving it a lot of times couldn’t find the answer”.

Any surprises?

One of the students reported that one of the questions in Maths was that from Physics. He said, “In Maths sections, I found four questions of Physics. Basically, these questions involved simple calculations but the theory to solve these is that from physics”.

Confirming the same, Ayush Kulshrestha from Aligarh said, “Yes. There was a question in Maths from Matrix that was wrong. Inspite attempting it, I wasn’t able to solve it completely”.
