Prof. Manikandan P Associate Dean, School of Hospitality Management, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies with 23-years of progressive Industry and academia experience. He is an MBA in Hotel and Tourism Management and also in International Business. Further, he is currently pursuing a PhD in Tourism and Hospitality.
In this Take 5-Series with Shiksha, Prof. Manikandan talks about the unique aspects of studying at School of Hospitality Management, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies; the kind of projects, internships and placement opportunities that students have, the best programs to study and how to take admission to these.
Q. What are the salient features of the teaching methodology adopted by your college? How does this differ from others?
We adopt multiple approaches to teach our students which are practicals, field visits, experts speech, presentations, project works and interactive class.
Q. How are you preparing your students to be Industry ready?
With the advanced teaching methodology, students are exposed to maximum practical learning and our placement committee is very strong to build industry students interface. Also, our internship semester gives a real taste of the Industry within the course.
Q. What are the qualities you are looking for in student applicants? What qualities do they need to do well in your course?
The qualities that we look forward in our students are:

Q. How do you ensure that your course curriculum is up to date and meets industry requirements?
We constantly update our curriculum according to industry developments, we continuously research and take feedback from the industry experts on the changes in the industry which will be carefully reviewed by Board of Studies and approved by an expert panel of Academic Council. In fact, we are one of the forefront Hospitality Management institutes to bring in AI, BlockChain, Virtual Reality into computer education. We also admit students in modern dresses and decent facial hairstyles for men at our classrooms.
Q. Is your college receptive to innovation, technology, science & entrepreneurship? How? Could you cite some examples of these?
We have a dedicated language lab, an entrepreneurship student’s committee, Chancellors Challenge Program for entrepreneurial students and recently had inducted software-based student management and exam systems.
